This Dover edition, first published in 1967, is an unabridged reproduction, with minor corrections, of the work originally published by Archibald Constable & Co., Ltd., in 1903.

Four of the illustrations were reproduced in color in the original edition and are here reproduced as black and white halftones.

In the world’s fairy tales, the Japanese are among the easiest for Western youngsters to approach.

This basic popular collection of such tales is a modern children’s classic. Such stories as “My Lord Bag of Rice”, “The sagacious Monkey and the Boar”, “The Ogre of Rashomon”, “The Bamboo-Cutter and the Moon-Child”, “The Mirror of Matsuyama” and the 17 others have delighted countless thousands of young readers for half a century.

This volume is beautifully illustrated in four black-and-white plates and 62 line drawings (most a half-page in size) by Kakuzo Fujiyama. Serpent-dragons, undersea kingdoms, magic chariots, brave warriors and beautiful ladies are the subjects that crowd these pages –subjects common to all fairy tales. But the imagination shown here is distinctly Eastern and so is the magical mood captured in the translations. The book will be welcomed by young listeners almost as much as by parents who are tired of reading the standard, over-familiar stories to their children.
