This book represents a powerful and comprehensive analysis and dilemmas of the welfare state, using the United States as an example of the domestic predicaments that beset an advanced industrial society with democratic and parliamentary government.
Janowitz, the well-known political sociologist, seeks to synthesize a wide body of theory and reasearch. He concludes with a series of observations for "institutional building", designed to strengthen the process of self-regulation.
According to the author, increased social control (self-regulation) is required to avoid a drift toward reliance on coercive control.
