Een recentie:

“In an earlier volume, Vanishing Africa (Morrow, 1971), photographer Ricciardi gave us a spectacular view of six tribal groups in Kenya. Using a similar format, she provides here a collection of 220 superb photographs (150 in color) and a trip diary with observations of three cultures of Western Brazilian Amazonia: the Kempa, the Marubo, and the well-known Yanomami. Disease, slavery, and the destruction of native land have reduced the Indian population of the rainforest to about ten percent of what it was when Westerners first encountered these groups. Ricciardi's photographs profile traditional activities of daily life that have survived for centuries. Yet she also describes a recent political unification of many Amazon Indian groups to fight for preservation of their forest. Anthropologist Marcus Colchester provides well-written historical and cultural backgrounds in his introduction for the three cultures. Highly recommended for both public and academic libraries.”
